Experience foreign conferences without the entry and travel costs

March 18th, 2007

Recently I heard about a conference called Future of Web Apps or FOWA for short. This conference is in America and involves staff from popular and influential web businesses giving presentations. Businesses who present include Digg, Yahoo, Google, Amazon, New York Times, and the list goes on. These presenters offer insights into what these organisations are currently working on and what they think is going to be the next big thing. Naturally I was very interested to attend except the cost and time requirements are not feasible for me.

Once I heard about this conference I found out about similar conferences such as the Mesh Conference in Vancouver and SXSW in America. Both of these conferences attract people who are successful in the field of online business and offer inspiring insight into overseas trends and business ventures.

So I began investigating if I could access the information presented at these conferences and I quickly learnt that podcasts of most key note presentations are available after the event from their web sites. Many of the podcasts are professionally recorded and edited.

Of course these podcasts do not replace attending the conferences as often presentations are not uploaded afterwards (so if a speaker refers to a slide or graph you have to use your imagination) and not all of the content from work shops, meetings, and networking sessions, is available.

If you are involved in a particular industry which has conferences that you are unable to attend, I suggest you investigate if they offer podcasts. They are usually free and offer the next best thing to being there.

Have you found any conferences which offers podcasts? If so, please add a comment and inform our listeners so they can benefit from your knowledge.
